Customer case
Verne Secures High-Bandwidth Data Center Connections for Managed Customers with Post-quantum Cryptography (PQC)

Customer
Verne is the leading provider of sustainably powered High Performance Computing (HPC) data centers requiring low latency and robust connectivity across the Nordics. The company’s data centers process intensive workloads, are powered by artificial intelligence (AI,) and are supported by a dedicated team of onsite experts.

The Challenge
In response to a specific customer demand, Verne sought a versatile solution that met stringent performance standards while ensuring uncompromised data transfer security.
The customer had also identified that strong security features are give them an edge in a very competitive market. When exploring solutions, the customer identified the following challenges:

Customer challenges in detail
- The data-in-transit needed to be encrypted between data centers in a reliable fashion while utilizing the Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) services from network service providers.
- Verne wanted to have full control over security, including encryption keys, use of cryptographic algorithms applied for data transmissions and transferring data in different transport layers (L2 and L3).
- The solution would need to support high-level network resiliency while being simple to deploy.
- The solution would need to be ready for quantum resiliency, as encryption algorithms are transitioning from classical encryption to PQC and quantum computers are advancing. Verne wanted to protect their current investments and customer environments while being ready for the quantum threat without needing to replace hardware (like cables, switches or routers).
- Encryption should have a minimal impact on services. The solution should be able to provide encryption with high bandwidth and with low latency. Most security solutions on the market experience dramatic performance issues (both in terms of transmission speeds and latency) when post-quantum cryptography is turned on.

The solution – High performance network encryptor NQX
Having worked with the defense sector for years, SSH Communications Security has gained valuable experience in building security solutions that meet very rigorous security and performance demands. NQX offers a unique combination of uncompromising post-quantum security, low latency and high-performance.
It is a future-proof, crypto-agile solution that provides customers with the flexibility to adopt the latest quantum-safe encryption algorithms as they emerge while supporting classical and post quantum encryption side-by-side, all without requiring massive hardware investments.
The NQX appliances are scaled from small mobile and remote site solutions up to datacenter models with connections reaching 100 Gbs. All models guarantee high service availability and resilience under large-scale Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.

Customer quote
“With the NQX solution, we are able to offer our managed private cloud customers more advanced solutions to protect their connections and more importantly data. We can securely embed customer data inside a quantum-safe tunnel, ensuring high bandwidth for protecting critical transmissions against cyber threats. Additionally, NQX operates at lower levels in the OSI model, including the data link layer (Layer 2) and the network layer (Layer 3), making it significantly harder for adversaries to capture data in transit.”
- Kim Gunnelius, Head of Finland from Verne.
Customer benefits
End-to-end encrypted
Take complete control over end-to-end encrypted data transmitted over any public or untrusted networks. Strong key exchange and encryption algorithms with sophisticated control measures ensure that sensitive data is encrypted with robust, quantum resilient security.
High performance
Up to six times faster than competing products when quantum-safe security is on for large-scale data transmissions.
Low latency
Transmit, replicate and synchronize data securely in real-time to applications, datasets or databases or without performance, synchronization, replication without bottlenecks.
Beyond compliance
Fulfill compliance requirements and then exceed them with future-proof post-quantum cryptography that prevents “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks.
Crypto-agile
Use classical and PQC algorithms side-by-side and adopt new ones as they emerge. NQX is easy to upgrade to use new algorithms.
Turnkey deployments
NQX can be preconfigured so that field deployments are easy and stress-free for non-technical personnel.
