Managing Host Views

Adding and Modifying Host Views

Host views are hierarchical groupings of the managed hosts, and can be defined according to the characteristics of the different host types or the organizational units they belong to. The host views should be defined immediately after the deployment of the Management Server.

There is one pre-set and fixed view, called Configuration. Typically more views are used for monitoring the different aspects of the host environment. There can be up to a few hundred host groups, but usually less than a hundred groups is enough.

To manage the host views, select Hosts → Manage views from the menu. The Manage views page lists all existing host views and you can add new ones.

The managed hosts can be viewed by clicking Hosts → View hosts on the menu. On this page, the contents of each Host View are presented on a separate tab. In the host list, the host names are links to detailed data about each host.

To select a host view, click its tab.

All hosts are originally placed in the same group called the Holding Area. They can be assigned to the other groups based on the given parameters. Each host view will contain all the hosts under management, either in a matching group or in the Holding Area.

The following parameters are convenient grouping criteria, as their values are provided by the managed hosts themselves and the hosts can be assigned to the groups automatically:

Grouping based on other parameters, for example organizational department or computer type (server, workstation), can be defined also in the ICB (see Managing Initial Configuration Blocks (ICBs)), or the host can be manually assigned to a group.

The administrator permissions define which host groups each admin will be allowed to view. All hosts are included in each view, but after the access rights have been fully implemented, only the host groups to which the administrator has access rights will be visible in the host views.

[Tip]Tip

To limit the access rights of the other administrators, the superuser should define a combination of host groups in the host views rather than additional host views.

[Note]Note

The host view by which software configurations are deployed gets selected the first time the superuser visits the Assign Configurations page (via Configurations → Assign configurations). It cannot be changed later.
