SSH Tectia

Upgrading SSH Tectia Client and Server from 4.x to 5.x-6.x

In the SSH Tectia release 5.0, the configuration file format used by SSH Tectia Client and SSH Tectia Server has been changed to a more flexible and robust XML format. The old configurations from version 4.x cannot be used with 5.x and 6.x versions, but new configurations must be created using SSH Tectia Manager.

Upgrading the SSH Tectia software to version 5.x-6.x consists of the following basic steps:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the new software architecture, packaging, and configuration.

  2. The existing connection profiles for SSH Tectia Client on Windows are automatically transferred from 4.x to 5.x-6.x during upgrade. The other configurations cannot be used. Make new configuration(s) either manually in XML or with SSH Tectia Manager.

  3. Upgrade the SSH Tectia software. SSH Tectia Manager completes the necessary installation steps automatically.

A separate document, SSH Tectia Client/Server Migration Guide, gives detailed instructions on upgrading from SSH Tectia Client and Server 4.x to SSH Tectia Client and Server 6.x.

Upgrading the Software on Unix

Before the upgrade on Unix, consider the following:

  • On Unix, the SSH Tectia Server packages include the basic Secure Shell client components, but the SSH Tectia Client packages no longer include the Secure Shell server components (as with 4.x).

  • If you earlier had SSH Tectia Server 4.x installed, SSH Tectia Manager will install the client and server packages when upgrading to 5.x-6.x. This way it attempts to preserve the same functionality as with SSH Tectia Server 4.x.

  • If there was an earlier SSH Tectia Client 4.x installed, SSH Tectia Manager will install only the client packages. After that there will be no server functionality at all. This is different from SSH Tectia Client 4.x where you would also have sshd2 which takes maximum two concurrent connections.

Upgrading the Software on Windows

On Windows, the packaging in SSH Tectia Client and Server 4.x was already similar to that in 5.x-6.x. SSH Tectia Client and Server come in different packages. So upgrading SSH Tectia Server 4.x on Windows to SSH Tectia Server 5.x-6.x will only upgrade the server.
