* Product News - Announcing the Next Generation of the Secure Shell Technology
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10 years since the invention of SSH1, SSH Communications Security continues to lead the development of the Secure Shell technology. Today, SSH has announced the third complete implementation of the Secure Shell protocol, the revolutionary new generation SSH G3TM architecture.
The new SSH G3 architecture is based on the popular Secure Shell protocol, developed by SSH. The new advanced architecture embodies major new inherent features, including dramatically enhanced data transfer throughput, significantly increased scalability, and the world's first commercially available implementation of the high-speed CryptiCore® encryption algorithm. SSH G3 is fully compatible with the Secure Shell v2 standards specified by the IETF.
The new SSH G3 architecture improves data transfer performance up to 200% with considerably lower memory consumption compared to other Secure Shell implementations, and allows thousands of simultaneous users to tunnel to one server. The new SSH G3 architecture will enable companies to smoothly and securely provide file transfers and application connectivity both internally and externally throughout the network.
The new Secure-Shell-based SSH Tectia products incorporating the SSH G3 architecture will be available for evaluation on request, and will reach general availability during summer 2005.
* Tips & Tricks: Changing Expired User Passwords on Unix Systems
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Unix systems with password aging in use, a user with an expired password gets prompted for a new password. Traditionally changing expired password has been done by running the system command "passwd" as a forced command which replaces the actual user session.
For SSH Tectia Connector users and chrooted users changing an expired password is not possible as a forced command. An alternative to this is to use the "AuthPassword.ChangePlugin" option in sshd2_config. The password-change plugin allows the password to be changed during the authentication phase, instead of running "passwd" as a forced command.
Modify the SSH Tectia Server configuration file sshd2_config to take the password-change plugin into use:
-- sshd2_config
AuthPassword.ChangePlugin /usr/local/libexec/ssh-passwd-plugin

-Compliance News: This document provides information on regulatory challenges related to information security and on how to implement effective technical safeguards and controls to better comply with legislations such as Sarbanes-Oxley Act and HIPAA. Compliance News also features articles on recent trends that have an impact on compliance projects such as deperimeterization, application security, insider threats, and selection criteria for choosing between open-source versus commercial security software. The target audience of the newspaper covers both IT professionals who want to gain a better understanding of regulative requirements, and compliance professionals who want to understand the role of information security in many regulations.
