New Finnish Co-operation Project Develops Data Security Solutions for Wireless Communication
Four industry-leading Finnish IT companies, Comptel Corporation, Elisa Communications Corporation, SiltaNet Ltd. and SSH Communications Security Corp., announced today a joint strategic Wireless Value Added Services II (W-VAS II) co-operation project focusing in the research and development of next generation wireless data security solutions.
With the work effort and financial investments involved in the project, all four W-VAS II group members show their commitment in creating a secure and trusted mobile Internet, where it is safe for consumers and companies to pay for and to use services of different kind. Sharing a wide experience in wireless communication, W-VAS II members get together in several workgroups producing technical solutions and implementable products that meet the needs of businesses serving the wireless value chain -- technology and infrastructure developers; application integrators; telecommunication, Internet and service providers; and end users.
Robust and invulnerable solutions will be offered in areas such as wireless authentication, digital signatures and certification, security applications for wireless devices like handheld PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) and smart phones, billing gateways, secure WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), Wireless Work Flow and W-PKI (Wireless Public Key Infrastructure).
The project is a part of Networks of the Future NETS technology programme and a partial funding for the W-VAS II project is provided by Tekes, The National Technology Agency. Tekes is the main governmental financing organization for technology research and development in Finland. "Planning and implementation of future wireless communication services needs strong emphasis in security. This also creates big business opportunities for companies which have good experience and knowledge in communication and security industry", said Senior Technology Adviser Tiina Nurmi of Tekes.
The W-VAS II -project is open to its members and offers them a joint validation and testing platform for securing the technical compatibility and interoperability between mutual new solutions as well as with general wireless and Internet-based network architectures. All members are also allowed to be active with other certificate organizations.
Tekes supported also the first W-VAS project that was organized in 1999 - 2001. The now announced second phase of the project continues the work and extends it to cover new research areas and security solutions.
