JNSA (Japan Network Security Association) Independent WLAN Field Study Demonstrates SSH Superior Security For Remote Access
SSH Sentinel and SSH IPSEC Express Succeed in First Public WLAN Security Test Conducted by the JNSA
SSH Communications Security (HEX:SSH1V), a world-leading developer of Internet security solutions, today announced that its award-winning security solutions, SSH SentinelJNSA engineers traveled within Tokyo, Japan, testing participating products in various public environments including restaurants, hotels and train stations. Although there are many benefits of wireless access such as convenience and increased productivity, the lack of or nominal security in these networks is a major concern. The tests indicated the severe vulnerabilities of public WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)"hotspots" that had little or no security features. The lack of strong encryption and authentication are tangible risks to those accessing corporate networks within these public WLAN locations.
Testing criteria was comprised of encryption algorithms, authentication protocols, NAT (Network Address Translation) issues and compatibility from various vendors that support WLAN security, focusing on IP-VPNs. SSH was one of four vendors who successfully passed all the criteria for securing a public WLAN with SSH Sentinel. The report also noted SSH Secure Shell, a well-known de facto standard for remote access and file transfer, as an easy to use alternative option to IPSec based security solution. Other vendors that successfully passed included: Checkpoint Software Technologies, Cisco Systems and Netscreen Technologies.
The popularity and use of wireless communication is apparent by the millions of people worldwide who use cell phones, pagers, laptops and other handheld devices that transfer and store personal and business data. The business environment has greatly shifted. Employees are no longer accessing mission critical data within the confines of the company firewall, but from coffee shops, bookstores and other public places," said Tatu Ylonen, CTO of SSH Communications Security Corp. "With this convenience comes a loss of control by IT staff to maintain network security. The need for secure deployment of WLANs has never been greater, and SSH's participation in this first major public test demonstrates the company's commitment to superior solutions for both wireless and wireline environments."
