Tatu Ylönen Receives the Finnish Engineering Award of the Year
The Finnish Association of Graduate Engineers TEK has granted Tatu Ylönen the Finnish Engineering Award 2000 for his work on developing Internet security solutions. In 1995 Tatu Ylönen founded SSH Communications Security Ltd, which has grown into the premier Internet security company.
SSH is a leading provider of cryptography-based Internet security solutions. Cryptography is a sensible and economic way of making the Internet secure. It enables secure web traffic and user authentication. The Internet is developing rapidly. That is why SSH is strongly involved in technology and product development. One of the best known SSH products and an Internet de-facto standard is SSH Secure Shell developed by Tatu Ylönen. The program guarantees strong security for remote connections over insecure networks such as the Internet. Secure Shell resolves some of the biggest security problems of the Internet, i.e. the stealing of passwords and secure downloading of files. Secure Shell has millions of users in over 80 countries.
SSH Communications Security has a long experience in Internet security solutions and is heavily involved in industry's standardising process. The founder of SSH, Tatu Ylönen and his nearest associates were part of an international group of experts at the Internet Engineering Task Force, who developed the Internet Protocol Security, IPSec-standard for secure Internet connections.
Challenging Product Development is Tatu's Strongest Field of Expertise
Today Tatu Ylönen is SSH's Chairman of the Board and Chief Technology Officer. "Tatu Ylönen has repeatedly proved that he is the vanguard Internet technology developer. He combines strong know-how, the ability to see the forest from the trees and the willingness to make sacrifices for a cause he feels is important", praises the CEO of SSH, Mr. Markku Kangas, who also credits the work Mr. Ylönen has done for the company.Ease of use, security, high quality software, constant product development, scalability and efficiency are features that differentiate SSH from their competitors. The biggest users of Internet security products are Internet Service providers (ISP), corporations, tele-operators, telecommunications networks' instrument manufacturers and Universities. SSH has distributed its Secure Shell software for free for the use of Universities. This is a central strategic manoeuvre in developing a new level of security and in establishing international standards.
The use of Internet is exploding as e-commerce and e-business is becoming more popular. E-commerce is expected to grow from last year's 40$ billion (US) to 1 300$ billion (US) by the year 2003. For cryptographic products figures were 70$ million (US) in 1999 and are expected to boom to 2 200$ billion (US) by 2003.
