A Finnish Co-operation Project to Develop Data Security Solutions for Wireless Communication
The Wireless Value Added Services (W-VAS) co-operation project that started at the beginning of September 1999 is developing solutions for electronic certificate and signature technology to be applied in the wireless environment.
The goal of this project is to utilize a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) solution for the needs of wireless data communication applications from the viewpoint of the current and future standards and technologies. Examples of these technologies are the latest versions of the GSM standards (Phase 2+), third generation mobile standard UMTS and the data security of services based on Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). The project exploits an existing PKI organization.
Application areas in the project are the banking and retail branches. The wireless data security solutions are developed primarily for these branches. The specific needs of different branches will be combined with general solutions that are compatible with wireless and Internet based network architectures.
The project lasts two years and products and solutions developed in the project will be utilized during the year 2000. The project is open to its participants and it doesn't restrict any participant to be active with other certificate organizations.
The project group is formed by Bull Finland, Helsinki Telephone Corporation and its subsidiary Radiolinja, Nedecon, NovaCall, Osuuspankkikeskus, Remtec Systems, Siltanet and SSH Communications Security. Project partners have wide experience on wireless communication and development of PKI solutions. Funding for the project has been applied from Finnish Technology Development Centre TEKES.
