SSH Communications Security Tests at VPN Interoperability Workshop Hosted by IBM
SSH Communications Security attended the VPN Interoperability Workshop hosted by IBM during September 26 - September 30, in Binghamton, NY. The event was the biggest of its kind until now, involving over 50 vendors from different countries.
The purpose of the VPN workshop was testing the interoperability for Internet Protocol Security (IPSEC), Internet Key Exchange (IKE), and Layer 2 Tunneling protocol (L2TP) solutions. SSH Communications Security tested three toolkits, SSH IPSEC Express, SSH ISAKMP/Oklay (SSH IKE), and SSH X.509 Certificate Tools.
Certificates are considered the only manageable authentication method for large-scale networks. The pre-shared key, another authentication standard, creates a big management problem due to the large number of configurations that need to be defined before the network works. Certificates on the other hand require much less configurations.
"It is true that interoperability between products of different vendors remains the main aim for the future work. We also have to consider other important issues that have to do with functionality and usability of IPSEC products. Easier configurations and deployment are very important tasks that need fast solutions" explains Tero Mononen, SSH Communications Security.
During the VPN Workshop, SSH Communications Security interoperated successfully with the following vendors: Microsoft, IBM, CheckPoint Software, Radguard, Entrust, Cisco Systems, ACC, Interlink Computer Sciences, Data Fellows, KA-ME, Verisign, Routerware, VPNet, TimeStep, IRE, Redcreek, Hi/fn, Watchguard.

Advanced Authentication Using Certificates
"We did plenty of testing with digital signature standard (DSS or DSA) with other vendors for the first time. SSH IPSEC Express has supported DSA signatures for long, but now we could verify that our certificates interoperate well with the products of other companies. SSH IPSEC Express has also support for RSA encryption and signatures.
